What Is BAS
Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS) offsets food costs for service members. Unlike BAH, BAS rates are the same everywhere regardless of location. Officers and enlisted personnel receive different BAS amounts.
2025 BAS Rates
Enlisted members receive approximately $460 per month. Officers receive approximately $320 per month. These rates adjust annually based on food cost changes measured by the USDA.
Who Qualifies
All service members on active duty receive BAS unless they receive meals from a government dining facility. Those assigned to meal cards typically don’t receive BAS. The entitlement resumes when meal card requirements end.
Tax Status
BAS is a tax-free allowance like BAH. This increases its effective value compared to taxable income. Factor this tax advantage when comparing military compensation to civilian salaries.
BAS and Deployments
Service members continue receiving BAS during deployments even when meals are provided at no cost. This effectively increases take-home pay during deployment periods.
Managing Your BAS
Some service members use BAS for meal prep and groceries at home. Others eat at dining facilities when available and save the BAS. Tracking food expenses helps optimize this allowance.
